Journey through the Bible: 1 John

Although this letter is near the "back" of the Bible, and not great in length or size compared to a couple of its closer neighbours (Hebrews or Revelation), the book of first John is a gem for the Christian. It has such words of comfort and exhortation, masterfully blended together. We find it both challenging and reassuring at once, in reading it through.

The apostle John wrote his gospel to give the readers a knowledge of the God-nature of the man Jesus Christ, that they would believe and be saved. In his first letter, he writes to the follower of Christ to give them knowledge or reassurance that they are, in fact, in the faith and walking with God. It is a sort of self-examination for the professing Christian. You will no doubt be blessed by our journey through this book!

Journey Through the Bible: 2 Peter

As we are rapidly approaching the end of the New Testament, we encounter 2 Peter. This little epistle almost reads like an ancient prophet, heavy with warnings about false prophets. However, it is also filled with encouragement. There is treasure in each passage, from the first verse to the last.

Journey Through the Bible: 1 Peter

As we journey through the New Testament we now come to the letters of Peter and John. We will travel first through 1 Peter. This letter is full of encouragement to persevere in the face of injustice and a practical treatise on how to live, as Jesus said, being in this world but not of it. We pray that all our hearts will be strengthened to walk the narrow way that Christ has laid out for us as we live our lives as witnesses of Him.

Journey through the Bible: Revelation

Since completing Paul's letters, we are fast forwarding straight to the end. We will be covering the 22 chapters of Revelation over the coming months, and as the saying goes, there's no time like the present. Things are escalating all around us, both politically and spiritually. Big changes in world and local culture are undeniable.

The book of Revelation is about "The End"; about Jesus, who declared Himself as both the Beginning and the End. This important, but often misunderstood book is precious, as it was given about Jesus and by Jesus Himself. No other book in the Bible has that distinction. What an exciting time to draw nearer to Him in His Word!

Journey Through the Bible: 2 Timothy

It is hard to believe that we are beginning 2 Timothy already! This is the final letter of the apostle Paul before his death; a letter filled with important last words--words of encouragement, warning, instruction and assessment. So much is here for us in just four chapters of this New Testament book. No doubt there will be great comfort and exhortation to our hearts as we consider the message of 2 Timothy in the coming weeks. We will jump right in to chapter 1, following the introduction this Sunday. See you there!

Journey Through the Bible: Philemon

This Sunday we will be covering Philemon. Both the introduction and the full book/letter will be our subject for the next two weeks. This brief letter from the apostle Paul to Philemon is not to be missed!

Journey Through the Bible: Titus

It is typical for us to move to the next book once we finish one, but since 2 Timothy is Paul's final letter, we are moving into Titus and Philemon before returning to wrap up with that book.

Paul left Titus on the island of Crete to establish churches. As with Timothy, Titus was a young pastor, and Paul exhorted him in his role. This letter is also filled with the challenge to live in grace and godliness. The introduction to the book was last week, and you can find the message in the Media section of the church website.

This Sunday we will also be sharing a meal together after the service. These times are always a blessing. If you are worried about not being able to bring something, just come anyway. There is always enough for everyone!

Journey through the Bible: 1 Timothy

In our sojourn through the New Testament we have reached the end of the section known as the prison epistles (Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, Thessalonians). We are now on the verge of heading into a new section, known as the pastoral epistles, which Paul wrote to young pastors about church life. These letters, beginning with 1 Timothy, are packed with how-to wisdom, doctrine, warning and encouragement. Join us Sunday for the introduction to Paul's first letter to Timothy.

Last Sunday we began our brief trek through Second Thessalonians. As short as this epistle is, it is jam-packed with truth about the coming of Jesus and things concerning the end times. The letter was written to encourage the church in the hope of heaven; something it is still doing today!

How exciting to be starting the new year with a new section of the New Testament! We will be considering the first letter of Paul the apostle to the church at Thessalonica (modern Thessaloniki in Greece). It is full of comfort, practicality and important scriptures regarding the coming again of Christ Jesus. Join us this Sunday, January 2nd for worship and fellowship around God's Word!

Colossians 4

There are so many situations in which people make comments and we have a choice to stay silent or respond. Should we take it to prayer or thoughtfully answer? This is part of ministering in daily life. How can we make the most of each opportunity for Christ? Chapter 4 of Colossians is so encouraging in this area. Come out as we wrap up this epistle this Sunday.

This Sunday we are finishing up chapter three of Colossians. Lots of practical instruction for our everyday relationships here. Come be encouraged and maybe reminded of  God's way of living in relationship with others.

We have gained a clearer understanding in Colossians of who Jesus is and what He has done for us. Now, for our response. The Bible doesn't mince words; it is so straightforward, practical AND powerful. God would never ask what He will not empower us to do by His grace. We are approaching the close of our third year of ministry in Edmonton. What an amazing milestone to be coming to! In November 2012 we began in the Gospel of John, and here we are ready to begin the epistle to the Colossians. It has been an incredible journey together through this section of the New Testament; we have all experienced the Lord faithfully at work in our hearts by the power of His living Word.

Join us this Sunday for the introduction to the book of Colossians, a letter written by Paul the apostle to a church he didn't plant himself but one on his heart. We will discover in it the sufficiency and supremacy of Jesus Christ above all else--all philosophy, knowledge, religion--and we will be encouraged to live on earth with the hope and mindset of heaven.

We are continuing our journey through the New Testament this Sunday as we begin with the apostle Paul's letter to the Ephesians. This six-chapter book is rich in many ways for the Christian, and we will explore what it has to say concerning our position as believers in Jesus Christ: from God's perspective, man's perspective, and in the spiritual realm. Join us this Sunday for an introduction to this book and be ready to be blessed by God's unfailing Word!

Journey Through the Bible: Galatians

This Sunday we will be embarking on a new study through Paul's epistle to the Galatians. This crucial book explains why we need to hold fast to the truth of the Gospel in order to maintain our freedom in Christ. Any diversions or perversions will lead us out of freedom and into bondage of some sort. We're looking forward to making our way through this New Testament letter and know you'll be blessed!

   We are finishing our study in the book of Romans, and in May we will begin a new study through the book of 1 Corinthians! Our journey through this epistle will carry us through much of the summer, as we move chapter by chapter and verse by verse through God's Word, seeking always to grow in our knowledge of Him and to learn how to apply His truth to our lives every day.

     Just before Christmas we finished the book of Acts, and we are excited to continue our book-by-book teaching through the Bible in Romans starting Sunday, December 29th!

     This letter written by Paul the apostle to the church at Rome is filled with both conviction and comfort, as the gospel is clearly laid out for the believer and non-Christian alike. It is a tightly presented case for Christianity as well, studied even by students of law for its impeccable and incomparable legal perfection. 

     We are trusting God to work powerfully through His Word as we survey chapter after chapter of this book, aptly nicknamed "the gospel according to grace".
